The weather has officially turned, and Autumn has officially arrived. Although, if your based around Lancashire like we are, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Autumn had been established for months! Anyway, now that the colder months are setting in, it’s time to start thinking about those heating bills, and how to manage them. Here at K and M Maintenance, we are heating and boiler experts. As a result, we have produced these tips to beat the cold and save on heating bills.

Get your boiler serviced

An annual boiler service doesnt just prevent full boiler breakdowns, it also tests your boilers efficiency. A boiler that is working efficiently, will be making use of every piece of fuel, costing a lot less to run. As a result, throughout the winter months when the central heating system is necessary, your heating bills will be lower.

Don’t turn up the thermostat

Its always tempting when the temperature begins to drop outside to turn up the thermostat. However, this can cost more money as part of your heating bills. A much more cost effective system is to set the thermostat temperature slightly higher than you may do normally, although do not exceed 21 degrees. This is considered to be optimum room temperature. The thermostat will then control the boiler to maintain your home’s temperature no matter what the temperature outside is.

Maintaining this steady temperature is a good way to keep the heating bills down as the boiler will need to use less fuel.

Make sure your home is well insulated

Loft and wall insulation can help to keep the temperature in your home steady, and reduce heat loss through the walls and the loft. This means you will need to use less fuel to heat your home, as less heat will be wasted.

In addition, reseal around your windows and doors to make sure that any holes or gaps are fully covered, so that the heat cannot escape.
