Lighting your home might seem like a fairly logical and simple task. However, simply installing one overhead light fixture per room and corridor is not the only solution to lighting your home. And actually, other types of lighting can be equally important, such as task lighting. But how does task lighting work, and what is it used for? Well, here at K and M Maintenance, we are Preston’s leading electrical experts. As a result, we have produced this guide to task lighting throughout the home.

What is task lighting?

So what exactly is task lighting? Well, task lighting is the lighting that helps you perform a particular task. And this differs from the light provided by the overhead light, because while this illuminates the whole space, it may not be enough light to perform certain tasks that require close attention. For example, reading, arts and crafts, or cooking, all require a significant amount of light that is carefully aimed. And this is where task lighting is extremely useful.

Task lighting throughout the home

Task lighting can be useful in just about every room in the house. For example:

  • The bedroom- Lots of people enjoy reading in bed, or even finishing off some paperwork in bed, and so task lighting is essential. You don’t need to be challenged by the main light shining directly in your eyes, but you do need some gentle light to help you complete your tasks before bed. Wall mounted reading lamps can be a great idea for this, especially ones that are adjustable.
  • The kitchen- Under the counter lighting in the kitchen can be a fantastic use of task lighting. It will really help you see what you are cooking, baking, or preparing, and can also provide ambient light to create a relaxing atmosphere.
  • The living room- Similar to the bedroom requirements, the living room really needs task lighting for reading and working, and one of the best ways to provide this is with movable, adjustable wall lights.
