It’s that time of year again when the central heating is switched back on and we are all relying on our boilers for a toasty warm house. This all means that winter is possibly the worst time of year to have a boiler issue. It’s also unfortunately one of the most common times to experience a boiler problem. Here at K & M Maintenance we have years of experience with boiler repairs, but prevention is better than cure, so here are some top tips to help you make sure your boiler is prepared for winter.

Service your boiler

If you haven’t had a service this year, now is the time. A service of your boiler will make sure that any faults or problems are recognised and repaired in time for the colder months ahead, and will also ensure that your boiler is working in top notch form.

Check your flue

As the pipe that removes waste gases from your boiler and your home, the flue is essential to a fully functioning boiler. Check your flue for any blockages regularly, and stay on top of your flue maintenance to prevent congestion.

Cleanliness

Keep your boiler clean and tidy. You would be surprised how many issues a layer of dust or a small piece of debris can cause within your boiler. Make sure your dust and check your boiler for any debris issues regularly, to prevent any clogging up within the boiler itself.

Insulate your Pipes

One of the worst things in winter is having no heating or hot water, and this is usually a result of frozen pipes. The condensate pipe is the usual culprit, as this is the pie that takes waste condensation away from your boiler and outside of your home. Obviously, in freezing temperatures, water carried in the tube is likely to freeze and prevent your boiler from working completely. You can avoid this though. Insulate your condensate pipe with foam tubing, available from most DIY stores, and you can protect your boiler from frozen pipes.

In summary

Prepare your boiler for winter by servicing your boiler, maintaining your flue, keeping your boiler clean and tidy and insulating your pipes. For any advice or a free quote contact K & M Maintenance today.
