As winter takes a firmer hold, we are beginning to rely more and more on our central heating. Although its lovely to be warm at home, the cost of bills can begin to rise. But how can you keep the costs down when it’s so cold outside? Here at K and M Maintenance, we know how important it is to keep the costs of winter down. This is our guide to help you combat some common heating mistakes.

Turning your thermostat up

52% of homes across the country admit that when the temperature drops outside, they will automatically turn up the thermostat. This is a common mistake. In reality, the role of the thermostat is to maintain the temperature within your home. This means that when you turn up your thermostat, you are keeping your home warmer than you need to. As a result, you are also using more fuel and more gas than may be necessary.

Keeping electric heaters on

A cheaper rate of electricity is often available after a certain point in the evening. Consequently, if you are using an electric fire or heater you could be paying more than you need to.

Heating water

If you have a conventional boiler, you may need to turn your hot water on. One of the most common mistakes is to have your hot water turned on all the time. However, you should use a timer system, set to half an hour before you get up. You should be able to then switch it off before you leave for work, and still have hot water in the evening. This is because a water heater with a good insulator will keep the water heated for half the day. As a result, there is no need to leave it on all the time, using fuel and costing money.

In summary

If you want to save money on your heating, you can keep your thermostat at its usual level. You can also use your electric heater in the evenings, and set your hot water to come on before you get up. For any help or advice, contact us at K and M Maintenance today.
