Choosing a new boiler and having it installed can be a tricky task, with a range of things to consider. In fact, people have often described the process as overwhelming. Here at K and M Maintenance, we understand the importance of ensuring that your new boiler is perfect for your unique needs, whether it’s a family home or a property development project. This is our guide to the essential considerations of a new boiler.

What size boiler do I need?

Combination boilers, otherwise known as combi boilers, are commonly available in four different sizes, 24-25 kw, 28-30 kw, 33-35 kw, and 40 kw. This can be a confusing factor for the first-time boiler buyer but it’s actually easier than you might think to fathom, using these guidelines. The smallest size is perfect for flats and small 2-3 bedroom houses, servicing up to 10 radiators. The 28-30 kw is suitable for a larger 3-4-bedroom home with up to 15 radiators, with the final two sizes suitable for large homes with up to 20 radiators.

Where should I position my boiler?

In most cases, it is easier, and therefore cheaper, to install a boiler where the previous boiler was, especially if you are changing from a combi boiler to another, more up to date, combi boiler, as the pipework will already exist. Failing that, you can position your boiler in any number of locations, as long as it has access to an outside wall to fit a flue, and access to a drain to take away the condensation waste.

What brand and make of boiler should I choose?

There are many brands of boiler available, but the most common are Valiant Eco-Tec, Worcestor CDI, Baxi Platinum, and Ideal Logic. Out of this selection the Worcestor and the Valiant are the most expensive, with the Ideal Logic being the cheapest. The length of warranty will differ depending on the brand and is something alongside cost that may also influence your decision.
