A constant pressure level is essential to keep your boiler working correctly. Occasionally, you may find that your pressure drops or rises above the 1 bar at which it should be set. This can occur if you have a leak, or it there has been a sudden drop in temperature, or if your radiators have been bled. But how do you reset the pressure? And how can you deal with pressure issues? Here at K and M Maintenance we are boiler experts. As a result, we have produced this guide to boiler pressure issues.

Check the pressure

Our guide to boiler pressure issues begins by checking your pressure gauge on the front of your boiler. It should be set to 1 bar. If your pressure has dropped or increased, this indicates an issue with your boiler or central heating system.

You can try to reset the pressure yourself. There will be specific instructions in your boiler manual or handbook. You should always refer to this as the first port of call and follow the instructions provided.

If you cant find your boiler manual, you can try these standard steps that work for most combination boilers.

Low pressure:

The very first step you should take is to switch off your boiler. This will allow your whole system to cool down.

Once cooled, you should try and find the filling loop hose. Make sure that both of the ends of this hose are attached to the valves.
Now you can open the valves with the handle or a screwdriver. This will enable the cold water from the mains to enter the system. You will be able to hear this water flowing in

Keep an eye on your pressure gauge as the water enters. Once the pressure gauge hits 1- bar, turn off each valve in turn.

The pressure should now settle at this level. If it doesnt, its time to call an expert.

High pressure:

If you have high pressure, you can follow these steps:

Make sure the valves on the filling loop are closed tightly. Otherwise water could continue to enter your system, pushing up the pressure.

You could also bleed your radiators. This will immediately reduce the pressure in the system.

If neither of these tips work, you need a professional and qualified engineer.
